Abstract:
|
This chapter focuses on humanistic education in a globalizing world by exploring experiences of teaching and learning in the annual international summer school on Pluralism, Development and Social Change. The summer school creates a rich microcosm of pedagogic practice in the context of globalization. It brings together graduate students, civil society professionals and activists from India, Indonesia, the Netherlands, South Africa, Uganda and Kenya. The program focuses on how to create ways to live together in circumstances of difference and conflict. The capability approach and it’s underpinning Human Development values have been one of its sources of inspiration. Powerful empirical examples illustrate the social justice potential of the programme. At the same time it becomes clear that socially just pedagogies can only go so far, in the face of the complex and multi-faceted structural inequalities in our world.
